George Kamboses Jr: The Man To Dethrone Teofimo Lopez
“Then we shall fight under the shade.”
-Spartans
The blood, the background of a fighter, might not always be related to the combatant’s written destiny. But when you mention the word “Spartan,” the first thing that comes to mind is an image of a fearless, ferocious warrior that’s put on this earth to be standing still when the smoke clears in battle.
On October 17th, George Kamboses Jr makes the walk with Spartan blood pumping through his veins to fulfil his purpose of conquering the man holding all the belts, Teofimo Lopez, under the shade of Bankwest Stadium in a heroic homeland showdown.
Espn, alongside the boxing writers association and many more, considers current lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez(23) the best fighter in boxing today. So, what would it take to dethrone the young champion? Well, an undefeated real-life Spartan who made the sacrifices of leaving his pregnant wife and children to prepare for battle might very well be the answer.
Starting his boxing journey at 11 years old to get in shape and overcome bullying, George Kambosos always had the sense that his calling in life was more prominent than anyone would fathom.
While you have the “built” stars in the sport, who are guided in every step to the sport’s summit. There’s something to be said about a combatant paving his own way to the pinnacle by thousands of gym battles, small shows to prove himself, and most importantly, conquer the place where all demons of self-doubt reside, inside the mind. George Kambosos is the embodiment of it all.
What does the Sydney-born(Kambosos) bring to the table?
That’s a question most fight fans and spectators are asking. It’s simple: Unmatchable self-belief, hunger, history, and ferociousness fueled by the desire to fulfil a promise that was made to his nation, and most importantly, his family.
These days, the flashy pad work and highlight-reel knockouts seem to be what most focus on when rating a fighter’s level of danger. And by no means is Teofimo Lopez undeserving of his status. But sometimes, the individual’s relentless desire and hunger will make up for any missing links in the equation to make life fair, and all it takes is one night.
That being said. Kambosos is fighting what some might call the killer of killers, or even the best. But the spartan is up for the test. And while Lopez is being touted as the fighter of tomorrow, Kamboses looks to show that he is the fighter of today.
Currently, George Kambosos is almost a 9 to 1 underdog against the heavily favoured champion(Lopez).
That shows that only a few are giving Sparta’s bravest a chance at scoring the upset. However, not many know that Kambosos is moulded from the Manny Pacquiao cloth by standing toe to toe for over 300 rounds with the 8 division champion.
Experience at the elite level is installed in the Spartan. And with the ferocious one’s lightning speed and tenacity, his shot of delivering a shocker might very well be set in stone.
When asked about the fight, Kambosos Jr said,
“I get goosebumps. I’ve manifested and dreamt of this moment for such a long time. I see it because I kept that tunnel vision despite the hard road I’ve been on. I’m Shocking the World, I’m telling you right now, I’m winning this fight.”
When picking teams at school sports or playgrounds, Kambosos was always picked last. But on October 17th, he looks to become first, not in a school race, or in a boxing tournament, or even in Manny Pacquaio’s camp, but in the entire planet, the superior fighter from his foes, the only way a Spartan knows.
