Errol Spence injured! Yordenis Ugas steps in to face Manny Pacquiao
Trouble in paradise for boxing fans around the world as the biggest fight in the calendar year takes a hit, with Errol Spence injuring his eye days before the unification showdown.
As most of us were eager to witness the epic welterweight clash between the eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao and the young southpaw Errol Spence later this month, Spence’s eye was compromised in training camp, forcing him to withdraw from the colossal event.
Although a critical part of the event was forced to withdraw, it still looks like we’re going to see Manny Pacquiao back in action later this month against the slick Cuban Yordenis Ugas.
Yes, it’s not the fight most boxing fans wanted to see. However, the newly booked matchup is still intriguing for the hardcore fans for a few key reasons.
Yordenis Ugas is one of the most avoided fighters in the welterweight division. With him (Ugas) being brought up by the Cuban system, the slick boxer brings a tricky style that is hard to deal with on any given day.
In Ugas’s last twelve fights, he suffered only one loss to Shawn Porter in what some might call his biggest fight to date. Although Porter squeezed out a split-decision win against Ugas, Many boxing analysts thought that the Cuban actually outclassed Porter in their fight.
Another critical factor is that Ugas dropped Porter in their fight. However, the judge ruled it as a slip, causing a 10-8 round to slip away from the Cuban.
So despite this fight not being the one we were looking forward to, there’s still some intrigue about this fresh matchup between the Pacman and the slick Cuban. How will Manny look after almost three years off? Can Ugas pull a blindsiding upset that will ruin the division’s planned trajectory? August 21st is where we shall find out.
